Windows XP EOL (End of life)

May 15th, 2014 . by admin

People may not know it but Windows XP is no longer supported by Microsoft.

What does this mean?  It means that there will no longer be any updates to the Operating System.  Ever see the “Windows Update” pop up in the corner reminding you you need to install updates to the OS?  That will no longer happen.

What does is the affect?  It affects the systems security and stability.  Windows will no longer be patched with security updates leaving the computer open to attack.  It will compromise the security of your files, your security on the web and leave you open to more viruses as Anti-virus providers are no longer going to support the system.  In short, it’s HIGHLY recommended that you upgrade to Windows 7 or 8 in order to get current.  These operating systems are supported through Microsoft and will help keep you safe.

What should you do about it?

Upgrade to Windows 7 or 8.  There are a few options below to help you make a decision.

  1. If your computer is over 4 years old, it might be more cost effective to get a new computer.  Investing the time and money it takes on older hardware may be wasted money.  If you don’t plan to move to a new computer in the next few years, option 2 might be the one.
  2. If your computer is up to 3 years old or less, you can purchase Windows 7 or 8 and install on your computer.  This is a “destructive install” which means you will have to be certain all your files are backed up before proceeding as it will wipe out everything on the hard drive.  This can be a cheaper option all around.  If the install is on older hardware, it’s time to weigh options between the 2.
